...Speaking of songs that are a little bit funky...
Meet Gunther, the really really ridiculously good looking former model/club owner straight outta Sweden. Sure to get every girl to touch your "tra-la-la", you definitely want to have Ding Dong Song handy for some of those more sensual moments.
Recently formed in 2007, Miike Snow is a Swedish band that has slowly been gaining popularity. This single, Animal, was recently featured on Gossip Girl. It's a laid back indie pop track that's sure to make everyone out there who likes something a little funky (eh ehm Nick) very happy. Not to mention it's a catchy tune that really grows on you. Listen to it once and I assure you, you'll be humming it soon enough.
This is seriously old school (from 1979!). Widely considered the first song that popularized hip hop, Rapper's Delight is a classic that everyone should have in their playlists.
In the spirit of this upcoming Friday's party, I present the soul behind the 106 and Pike Party: Nappy Roots. This Southern rap quintet out of Kentucky is composed of Fish Scales, Skinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, and R. Prophet. Their hit album Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz went 5-times platinum off the strength of the hit singles Po' Folks, Awnaw, and Headz Up.
Fun Fact - Nappy Roots requested 1 thing to have along with their check when they perform: A whole bunch of fried chicken.
Beatnick & K-Salaam, the production team out of Minnesota, recently released this project in which they remixed some classic songs by Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder. They produced some ill beats for this compilation and definitely got some nice cover art.
Tracks they remixed:
Michael Jackson – I’ll Be There
Marvin Gaye – Ain’t No Mountain
Stevie Wonder – My Cherie Amor
Michael Jackson – Never Can Say Goodbye
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On
Stevie Wonder – Uptight
Michael Jackson – ABC
Marvin Gaye – Let’s Get It On
Florida-grown rapper Riskay hooks up w/Aviance and Real on this track about an unfaithful relationship. I think this song has a very deep and true message that hits close to home for all of us.
With a name like Boogz Boogetz, I wasn't sure what to expect out of this track, but after listening to it I was pleasantly surprised. This track sounds like it could have been a bonus track off of Kanye's 808s and Heartbreak, but I like it. Only suggestion I can give would be a name change. Warning: Auto-tune is in effect.
The messengers is a 3 part mixtape series where each tape pays tribute to a different artist. The artists are Fela Kuti, Bob Dylan, and Bob Marley. J. Period mixes these artists' songs and often reshapes them into a form that K'naan can flow over. The result is a nice crossover between genres and some good "chill" music.
Check out the 3 song Digital EP for a few highlights
Tracklist:
1) Let’s Start (Fela Kuti Tribute)
2) Belly Full (Bob Marley Tribute)feat. Kardinal Offishall, Steele & Bajah
A tailgating favorite, this simple singsongy bluegrass hit is a remake of Bob Dylan's Wagon Wheel into a masterpiece. It's soothing melody and smooth lyrics about a beautiful and hopeful love story directs your thoughts inward with a comforting peace of mind. From the banjo's loving twang to the steadying metronome that is the bass, this catchy jingle is sure to get stuck in your head and rock you to inner peace.

Meet Lights, an up and coming indie artist from Canada. Relatively unknown in the States, she's rising to fame internationally. Not to mention, she's absolutely gorgeous. She's also a complete nerd, actually updating her video blog through WOW and has some fuckin awesome tattoos.
Her song "Drive my Soul" (Victor Rusin Remix), is mashedup with the classic "Walkin' on the Moon" by The Dream feat. Kanye West.
This song has a nice mellow house sound coupled with The Dream's recognizable R&B style, and Kanye's rhyming. The mashup was done by flipboitamidles, he's done an excellent job, and more of his tracks can be found on his blog. It's an awesome track, probably my favorite of everything I've posted so far. Enjoy.
Deadmau5 is an well-known electronic/house music artist. He's pretty new, and has only gained fame in the past few years. His classic Ghosts 'N' Stuff became incredibly famous, and almost single-handedly launched him into the house music mainstream. This new song, an edit done by Rob Swire (from the Drum & Bass group Pendulum), will be featured on Deadmau5's newest album "For Lack of a Better Name". The song is pretty sick, a vocal edit of the classic. I've provided links for both the original and the edit.
Blue Scholars is a hip-hop duo from Seattle. I love their combination of relaxed feel and deep lyrical meaning. This song is a bit old (from their 2005 album), but its relaxed feel and strong beat make it a great song for whenever. Enjoy.
Although he may not be a household name (yet), J. Cole is certainly an artist to watch as his first two mixtapes have left listeners wanting more. His clever wordplay, lyrical substance, and smooth flow earned him the first spot on Jay-Z's Roc Nation label and one of the only featured verses on Jay-Z's most recent album (next to Kanye West and Young Jeezy). J. Cole is a breath of fresh air in a hip hop industry that has recently been filled with dumbed down lyrics and repetitive voice effects. He has speculated that his debut album should be out next Spring and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.
This is a new song in the house scene. Tiesto has fallen in love with it and has been playing it in all of his new podcasts, not to mention pretty frequently in his current world tour. It's very laid back, definitely a great song to chill to.
Forever (prod. by Boi-1da) will be featured in the upcoming Lebron James documentary. The song's huge line-up does not disappoint. If you haven't already, you want to check this out.
The Boi-1da beat isn't all that new. It's been floating around since over a year ago and in at least two instances spawned songs other than 'Forever'.
The first, I Want it Forever, dropped in August of last year and is basically an older version of Forever with different verses from Drake and Wayne. Interestingly enough, it's fair to say that Wayne's verse here > Wayne's verse on Forever
The other is by Kardinal Offishal and titled Bring it Back. The song portrays Offishal's ability to flow at a rapid-fire pace.
This is Crooks and Rooks by Bambu, a Filipino hip-hop artist out of California. My cousin did the cinematography on this one; I like his attempts to empower the listener and the laid-back old school beats.
Fly Union means, fly beats and fly flow. These guys are pretty good, upbeat and good lyrics. If you like J.Cole/N.E.R.D/Lupe then you'll like this. Note: 4 songs, all very good. Personally, I recommend Great feat. Willie the Kid.
With hits like "Day N Nite" and "Make Her Say" and co-signs from heavy-hitting artists like Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Eminem, many questioned whether or not KiD CuDi's debut album would live up to the hype. On September 15th, with the release of Man on the Moon: The End of Day, KiD CuDi answered all those questions. With a song to go along with whatever mood you're in, this album is an easy-listen all the way through.
"...Turn on the radio and it make you thirst away." This is why you have to get this track, I've always been a big fan of N.E.R.D, it's the bonus track on Seeing Sounds that was only released in the UK.
This song is sure to get any house music aficionado off. If the house scene isn't for you...try messing with some substances then listening to this, it's guaranteed to rock your world. Preview it here:
Drake blew up recently with the So Far Gone tape/album, but about a year before, Drake dropped Comeback Season. The tape has some serious bangers, including City Is Mine.
The beat, produced by Boi-1da, has a simple melody and complex rhythm -- a contrast that works exceptionally. On top of that, the beat has enough holes for Drake to do his thang lyrically in between.
